English Longcase by John Firderer, Birmingham
Circa 1850. English 8-day four pillar longcase clock by John Firderer of Birmingham. Flame mahogany case. 8-day weight driven movement with hour and half hour striking.
The dial is a unique depiction of the story of the Samaritan woman at the well, which comes from the Gospel of John 4:4-4. The story is subject to some debates to any possible hidden meanings. Mr Thompson, once the Curator of the British Museum, stated;
"This dial was never painted on a clock, or at least that is what I thought"
This specific dial would have been commissioned. as to who is was for, that has been lost to time, but it does leave us with a unique and beautiful hand painted dial.
Dial also displays both moon-phase and subsidiary date dials.
